Understanding the need of a Gas Flow Meter

We are a part of energy-hungry world, particularly oil and natural gas. More prominently the use of natural gas in this day and age has spiked.

Consequently, this hunger needs to be kept in check. One of the most compelling questions faced by technicians, engineers at site is whether the heating equipment(s) used at the factory site is running in its most favorable condition.

If your equipment is running too rich, it suggests that it is using more combustible fuel than needed for favorable conditions. On the contrary, if your equipment is too lean then it signifies that it is not functioning at its optimum level. Several possibilities including the piping may have leakages or some Relief Valve is bleeding which have gone unnoticed can cause these two terminal conditions.

These two extreme yet highly likely conditions give rise to wastage of fuel, increase in fuel cost and emission of after combustion-pollutants leading to environmental compliances issues.

On account of lack of knowledge of gas measurement parameters, can lead to punitive issues such as production slowdown, poor quality of produced goods, safety events, serious accidents, emergency shutdown, unplanned maintenance, cost overruns and the like.

Several gas fired applications demand precise and more importantly dependable gas flow measurement as it is crucial in various functional applications such as safety, process control, product quality, production efficiency, environmental compliance and costs.

Consequently, using a sophisticated gas measurement and metering system has become a need of the hour.

What is a gas flow meter?

A gas flow meter is an equipment that measures volumetric flow rate or mass flowrate of various gases and fuels. A gas flow meter coupled with Electronic Volume Correctors is one of such automatic systems which help in monitoring gas consumption levels.

Types Of Flow Meters:

Based on the type of fluid, construction, application flow meters are broadly classified in to 4 types:

    • Differential Pressure Flow Meters
    • Positive Displacement Flow Meters
    • Velocity Flow Meters
    • Mass Flow Meters

 Differential Pressure Flow Meters

As the name suggests, these type of flow meters measure the differential pressure across an orifice. These meters consist of several types of sensors, orifice plates, pitot tubes and the like. Note that these orifices may get clogged overtime if the gas is dirty and unfiltered, and thus may require regular maintenance. These type of flow meters are more often than not used in the oil & gas industry, including HVAC, mining, paper and chemical applications.

Positive Displacement Flow Meters

Positive displacement (PD) flow meter measures the actual volume filled with fluid or gas, transfers it ahead and fills it again, calculates the amount of fluid transferred. This type of meter measures flow of fluid directly instead of calculating some other parameter and later converting it to flowrate. These meters consists of various piston meters, oval-gear meters, rotary vane type meters. Famous for their precision and accuracy. positive displacement flow meter are generally used in the transfer of fuels like gasoline, LPG, fluids like oils, hydraulic fluids. Thus, they find huge application in water and gas industry.

Velocity Flow Meters

Velocity meters measure velocity of the fluid flow to calculate the volumetric flowrate. These type of flow meters include turbine, electromagnetic and sonic/ultrasonic flow meters.

Mass Flow Meters

As the name suggests, these type of flow meters measure mass flow rate of fluid travelling through pipe. These include Coriolis mass meters and thermal dispersion meters. Coriolis meters are highly accurate and are often used in custody transfer applications. However, they are on the expensive side and need labor-intensive inline applications. Thermal Dispersion meters are used to measure the total mass flow rate of a fluid, mainly gases, flowing through closed pipe. These meters are generally used in chemical, gas and wastewater processes. Moreover, these meters find use in pharma, power, mining industries.

Gas Flow Meters Types

TURBINE FLOW METER

A turbine gas flow meter is a gas volume detecting instrument based on velocity principle. Elgas turbine gas meters offer high measurement stability and thus measure the gas consumption accurately. These meters are robust, reliable and are available in large range of pressure ratings and sizes. Elgas turbine gas meters offer an over-run-brake feature, which is crucial to eliminate measurement errors in burner ON-OFF applications. They are designed considering the requirements of industrial gas metering applications. Moreover, they are manufactured in accordance with EN standards.

ROTARY FLOW METER

A rotary gas flow meter works on the positive displacement principle which makes volumetric measurements by displacing finite volumes of gas. For high precision gas volume measurement applications, like metering for Gas companies, Elgas Rotary type meters are preferred. They are specifically designed to meet the highest demands of reliable and accurate measurement of gas consumption. These meters offer large range ability, exceptional performance and allow local repair and on-site cleaning. Coupled with advanced features to meet future requirements, they are compliant with relevant European standards.
